Iridescence

fabric store

always loved it
so many different textures
feels
calling to my fingers
soft, silky
coarse, grainy
corduroy
(that feels tingly when you rub your hand crosswise)
netted mesh
felt
fur
(ah, the furs...)

i can spend hours touching
relishing
feeling each subtle difference
and then walk out
without having bought anything
but so much richer in experience...

i'm not picky about the feels
each texture is a sensory wonder
the smooth
bumpy
silky
ribbed
all tantalizingly touchable

but
when it comes to looking...
there's
only one
that satisfies my sensory hunger

a relatively small swatch
blue-green on one side
hold it, touch it, feel the shimmer
the slight stiffness
but shift
ever so slightly
and it becomes
...golden?

how...?

i try again
hold it on one side
calmingly cool
but then...
the slightest shift
...dazzling...

i know this fabric

they have it in my life, too...

from one side, one view
but shift
and suddenly
a completely different world...
worlds apart

how...?

but more importantly...
...Why.....?
what can i understand here?

i look
and look
turning
examining the sides
the colors
the options

i look
drink the fabric in with my eyes...
but

i don't understand.

Sometimes we can look and look and still never understand...we remain captivated and mystified at the same time.

Interesting, because I think I understood.

So...now what...?

Apple--
Teach me, please...

Hmm. More to ponder...

Yeah, that's a neat trick they do with fabric no? But they started doing the same thing on movie boxes and what not).

True, it does represent most peoples double lives, especially girls...which reminds me of Sheryl Crow's famous song; "I'm a b---, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner I'm a saint; I do not feel ashamed, etc..." apropos, or out of place?...what difference does it make anyway right?

The complexity and multi dimensions of humans adds richness (and frustration) to our lives. Imagine if everyone would behave the same way all the time, no ups, no downs. I think we'd get bored very quickly...
Though, it can definately be frustrating, seeing completely different actions/behaviors in one person; especially when we don't understand the cause.

I don't know...I don't have any more answers than you do...

Sometimes we have to accept that there are things we don't understand. And it's okay not to know.

The blue-green is beautiful....but don't you love that some people look at you and see...golden?

On different days, in different moods, during different weathers, a different spectrum of colours will be revealed. It's all there but depends on our view slant, how we are looking and maybe even how much we want to see.

Another really great post.

We'll talk. ;)

Beautiful. And I also feel like a kid in a candy shop when i visit a fabric store, or even in a clothing store-still lots of fabrics and textures:)

Nice little twist you got there :-)

LOL I'm out. I can't even name different materials..let alone appreciate the feel. I liked the lesson though :)

Ezzie--
Ever gonna share all these ponderments?
:-)

Shlomo--
I wasn't necessarily referring to double lives, but that does fit in as well...

Peace--
Interesting you also took it to mean personalities...
Guess I was not all that clear...I was writing it more in terms of lack of situational clarity.
But good point :)

Scraps--
Of course it's okay.
But...I really want to anyway...

Chaya--
Yes!...How did you know? Dunno if you realized it, but gold is a color that has a lot of personal significance...

Smile--
I agree.
Now just gotta make sense of it all...
:)

Apple--
We shall.
But...when...?!

Madd--
Ah, another freak like me! We should take a trip there together
:-P

Bas--
Twist and shout...
:-P

Half--
I can't name them either. Chantong? Taffeta? Bouclee? To me it's like, "Yeah, that shiny black material over there that feels like a cross between that silky one over there and the scratchy one there."
:-)

did you mean to call this post "iridescence?"

that type of fabric you described (so fabulously well) is called iridescent. The warp and weft are woven both with at least 2 contrasting reflective colors (from silk or poly fibers) and depending on the angle, they are one color or another.

Great post...

what i love about such fabrics is that they can be so versatile... depending on the situation or mood..
we are made up of so many fibers ourselves, and to be open to so much at once can make us iridescent..

oh, this post works on so many levels. Nice!

Loved this post..
because of the imagery and the mystery at the end
...sort of left me hanging..
clueless as to what you mean..
yet...somehow understanding profoundly..

Jack & Eve--
Good point! I was actually thinking of just that word! I thought I had it, too, there...
:-)
Think I should switch the title now?

Chav--
Good points...
I shall have to think about those...
(It's kinda cool to write a post and have everybody think you meant all the things they're thinking...It's sorta like J. K. Rowling...d'you really think she meant all those cool things when she wrote...? :-D)

David--
Thank you.
I think I feel the same way...Clueless, and yet understanding more than I ever dreamed I could imagine...

chav said...

Oh, you're a fan, too?

I think she meant it all.. every single word. I mean, honestly... thirteen years to write a series! It does produce crystal clear detail in so many ways... It seems so real.
